Underwriting & Operational Risk Analytics Dashboard in Tableau | RUSA Analytics
Insurance underwriting requires a clear understanding of pricing, portfolio exposure, customer retention, cancellation behavior and claims performance. When these measures are spread across multiple reports and spreadsheets, identifying performance differences between insurance products and risk segments can become challenging.
RUSA Analytics developed an Underwriting & Operational Risk Analytics Dashboard in Tableau to bring these important indicators together in one interactive business intelligence solution.
The Tableau dashboard provides a consolidated view of quote-to-bind performance, average premium, cancellation rate, exposure and renewal rate. It also includes premium and retention trends, loss ratio analysis by risk tier, a customer age-segment bubble visualization and a detailed segment performance table.
By combining these views, the RUSA Analytics Tableau dashboard helps users explore how underwriting performance varies across products and risk categories.
This project uses synthetic insurance data and demonstrates a practical approach to insurance analytics, KPI monitoring and interactive Tableau dashboard development.
What Is an Underwriting Performance Dashboard?
An underwriting performance dashboard is a business intelligence tool that helps insurance teams monitor how policies perform across pricing, risk, retention and portfolio exposure.
The RUSA Analytics Tableau dashboard focuses on several important business questions:
How effectively are insurance quotes converted into bound policies?
What is the average premium across the portfolio?
How much policy exposure does the portfolio represent?
What percentage of policies are cancelled?
How well are renewal-due policies being retained?
How does loss ratio vary across risk tiers?
Which insurance products show different cancellation and profitability patterns?
How do premium and retention trends change over time?
Tableau makes these questions easier to explore by combining KPI cards, trend charts, comparative visualizations and detailed segment-level reporting.
Overview of the RUSA Analytics Tableau Dashboard
The dashboard is designed to provide an executive overview of underwriting performance and operational risk.
Key Performance Indicators
The KPI cards at the top of the Tableau dashboard highlight five important measures:
Quote to Bind: Shows how effectively quotes progress into bound policies.
Average Premium: Provides a view of the average written premium per distinct policy, according to the project's KPI definition.
Cancellation Rate: Helps monitor the proportion of policies identified as cancelled.
Exposure: Shows the total exposure represented in the reporting data.
Renewal Rate: Indicates how successfully renewal-due policies are retained.
Together, these indicators provide a starting point for understanding the relationship between policy acquisition, premium, exposure and retention.

1. Quote-to-Bind Performance
Quote-to-bind performance helps insurance teams understand how effectively quoted business converts into bound policies.
Monitoring this indicator can help identify changes in conversion performance and highlight areas where further analysis may be useful.
The Tableau dashboard displays a quote-to-bind rate of approximately 46.0% in the supplied screenshot.
This figure should be interpreted in the context of the synthetic project dataset rather than as an industry benchmark.
2. Average Premium Analysis
Average premium provides an overview of the written premium associated with the policy portfolio.
The dashboard displays an average premium of approximately $30,338.
Analyzing average premium alongside product, risk tier and cancellation performance can help users explore differences in the portfolio's pricing profile.
For example, a change in average premium may reflect a shift in product mix, policy characteristics or the composition of the business being written. The dashboard provides a starting point for investigating these patterns rather than assuming a single cause.
3. Cancellation Rate Monitoring
Cancellation rate is an important indicator of policy stability.
A high or increasing cancellation rate may warrant further investigation into customer retention, product mix, policy characteristics or changes in the portfolio. However, the KPI alone does not establish why cancellations occur.
The dashboard displays a cancellation rate of approximately 35.5%.
The segment performance table allows users to compare cancellation rates across Commercial Property, Home, Motor and Travel products. This provides additional context beyond the overall KPI.
4. Exposure Analysis
Exposure represents the amount of insurance risk represented in the portfolio according to the project's dataset definition.
The dashboard displays exposure of approximately $440B.
Exposure should be interpreted according to how the source data defines and measures it. It is not automatically equivalent to written premium, earned premium or the amount of claims expected to be paid.
By reviewing exposure alongside product, cancellation rate and loss ratio, users can explore how the portfolio is distributed across different segments.
5. Renewal Rate and Retention
Renewal rate measures the proportion of renewal-due policies that were successfully renewed.
The dashboard displays a renewal rate of approximately 94.1%.
This KPI provides a useful view of policy retention. When analyzed alongside cancellation rate, it helps users examine two related but distinct aspects of policy continuity.
The dashboard also includes a monthly trend comparing premium and retention performance, allowing users to explore how the two measures change over time.
Premium and Retention Trend Analysis
The trend visualization compares Gross Written Premium with Retention Rate across the reporting period.
This chart helps users examine whether premium performance and retention follow similar or different patterns over time.
With Tableau, users can explore the trend rather than relying on a single reporting-period value.
The visualization supports questions such as:
How does premium change over the reporting period?
Does retention remain relatively stable or fluctuate?
Which periods may deserve closer investigation?
Are changes in premium accompanied by changes in retention?
These are investigative questions. Additional analysis is required before attributing any observed trend to a specific business cause.
Loss Ratio by Risk Tier
Risk-tier analysis provides another important view of underwriting performance.
The dashboard compares loss ratio across four risk categories:
High Risk
Low Risk
Medium Risk
Very High Risk
The supplied screenshot shows differences in loss ratio between these categories, including a higher displayed value for the Very High Risk segment.
This visualization can help analysts identify risk tiers that warrant further review. It should not be used on its own to conclude that a particular risk category is profitable or unprofitable, because the result can also depend on earned premium, claims experience, segment size and the underlying data definitions.
Using Tableau to compare loss ratio across risk tiers helps turn a portfolio-level measure into a more detailed analytical view.
Customer Age-Segment Bubble Visualization
The dashboard includes a bubble chart showing age bands such as 18–29, 30–44, 45–59 and 60+.
A bubble chart can make it easier to compare several groups visually. The size, position and color of each bubble should be interpreted according to the measures assigned in the Tableau worksheet.
This view supports exploratory analysis of how the age segments represented in the synthetic data differ.
Age-segment patterns should be treated as descriptive observations, not as evidence of causation or as a basis for real-world underwriting decisions.
Segment Performance Analysis
The Segment Performance table provides a more detailed comparison of the insurance products in the portfolio.
The table includes:
Product Name
Cancellation Rate
Exposure
Gross Written Premium
Loss Ratio
Renewal Rate
The dashboard compares four product groups: Commercial Property, Home, Motor and Travel.
This table complements the KPI cards and charts by showing multiple performance measures together. For example, an analyst can compare the cancellation rate of a product alongside its exposure, premium, loss ratio and renewal rate.
This makes it easier to identify segments that may benefit from additional investigation without relying on a single KPI.
Interactive Filters in Tableau
The dashboard includes filters for:
Date
Claim
Country
Policy Type
Product
Risk Tier
Channel Name
These filters allow users to narrow the reporting view to selected parts of the insurance portfolio.
For example, users can explore a particular product or risk tier and compare its underwriting indicators with the wider portfolio. Filter behavior depends on how the worksheets and dashboard actions are configured in Tableau.
How the Tableau Dashboard Supports Business Analysis
The RUSA Analytics dashboard brings together several perspectives that are often reviewed separately.
Acquisition: Quote-to-bind performance helps monitor conversion from quotes to bound policies.
Pricing: Average premium provides context for the portfolio's written premium profile.
Retention: Renewal and cancellation rates help users examine policy continuity.
Exposure: Exposure analysis provides context about the risk represented in the portfolio.
Risk segmentation: Loss ratio by risk tier supports more detailed portfolio monitoring.
Product comparison: The segment performance table brings together multiple measures for product-level analysis.
Together, these views provide a structured starting point for investigating underwriting performance and portfolio behavior.
Tableau Development Approach at RUSA Analytics
The dashboard is part of a broader insurance analytics proof-of-concept developed using Tableau.
The development workflow includes:
Understanding the underwriting and operational risk questions.
Preparing and reviewing the synthetic insurance dataset.
Establishing the Tableau logical data model.
Creating and validating the KPI calculations.
Building individual Tableau worksheets.
Combining the worksheets into an interactive dashboard.
Reviewing the layout, labels, number formats and filter behavior.
Checking dashboard values against the project's validation results.
Separating KPI validation from dashboard design helps reduce the risk of presenting misleading totals or inconsistent business measures.
Dashboard Design and User Experience
The RUSA Analytics Tableau dashboard uses a clear executive layout to make important indicators easy to find.
The KPI cards appear at the top, followed by trend analysis, risk-tier comparison and the age-segment bubble chart. The segment performance table occupies the lower section and provides a more detailed product comparison.
This layout supports a natural analytical flow: review the overall indicators, explore patterns in the charts, and then examine individual product segments.
